BEST APP

The best app to become more athletic

The best app to become more athletic trains strength, power, endurance and mobility together, counts every sport you play, and keeps going when a plan ends. Complete is the fitness superapp: every sport counts, and you compete with your friends in all of them. “Become an athlete” is one of the six goals you pick when you join, and Complete, our own app, recommends what to do each day from your goals, your recovery and your recent training. If routes and segment leaderboards matter most to you, Strava is built for those.

What being athletic takes

Athletic is four skills, and an app that trains only one makes you good at one thing. Strength is how much force your muscles can produce. Power is how fast you can produce it, as in a jump, a throw or a sprint. Endurance is how long you can keep working, which comes down to your heart and lungs. Mobility is how freely your joints move.

For a floor, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, or an equivalent mix of the two, plus at least 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity each week. The CDC’s rule of thumb is that at moderate intensity you can talk but not sing, and at vigorous intensity you cannot say more than a few words without pausing for breath. That floor is for health. Being athletic is a wider set of skills.

What to look for in an app

Six checks, with what Complete does for each.

CheckWhy it mattersComplete
It starts from what you wantBecoming athletic takes years, so the app should know where you are headingYou pick goals when you join: build muscle, lose fat, improve cardio, get stronger, general health or become an athlete
It counts every sport you playYour football, climbing and gym sessions are most of your weekEvery workout that reaches Apple Health counts, from any watch that writes to it
It tells you what to do todayYou need a next session, not a calendar you have fallen behind onA daily recommendation from your goals, preferences with fixed training days, habits, history and recent load
It fits your recoveryThe right session depends on how recovered you areA red recovery day turns today into rest or an easy session, and your week stays; with no wearable, a morning check-in still shapes the day
It works with your watchYour data should come in without retypingApple Health from any watch, plus WHOOP and Oura for recovery and sleep
It lets friends inSome people want company in their training, so check whether the app has itYou can compete with friends if you want to; it is optional

One session that trains power

This session comes from Complete’s library, so you can see what power work looks like. Do power work fresh: stop a set the moment the bar or the jump slows down. A power clean lifts a barbell from the floor to your shoulders in one fast movement. A superset is two exercises done back to back, with rest after the pair. Effort is out of 10, where 10 is all you have.

BlockWhat you do
Warm-upAssault bike for 5 minutes at effort 4 out of 10: warm the system, because power work needs a fresh body. World’s greatest stretch, 5 per side, to open the hips for full extension.
MainPower clean, 5 sets of 3 reps, resting 3 minutes between sets, at about 75% of your max and moved fast: drive the floor away and meet the bar with a forceful hip extension, and every rep moves fast or it does not count. Box jump, 4 sets of 3 reps, resting 2 minutes between sets: explode up and land soft and quiet in a quarter squat.
Accessory: superset, 3 rounds, resting 90 seconds between roundsKettlebell swing, 12 reps, heavy and fast: snap the hips so the bell floats, and project it forward, not up. Medicine ball slam, 10 reps: reach tall, then drive the ball down through the floor with the whole body.
FinisherBurpee broad jumps, 2 sets of 12 m, resting 60 seconds between sets: short, sharp jumps to close the session. Land soft, reset, go again.

If you are new to power work

The library scales this session. A beginner swaps the power clean for a dumbbell hang clean or a kettlebell swing, and keeps the loads light and fast. Take full rest between sets to keep every rep explosive.

How Complete works toward it

Complete is our own app. We wouldn’t build it if we didn’t think it was the best, we train with it ourselves, and we work every day to make it better. Complete starts from your goals, not from a plan. The goals screen says: “Not a plan. These are your forever goals. They steer what Complete recommends every day.” Over time it gets to know your body, your schedule and the sports you play.

Everything you do counts: Apple Health from any watch, imported FIT files (the workout file most sports watches can export), runs tracked with your phone and sessions you log. Your recovery is scored against your own baseline from HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and breathing rate, and it takes about a week to calibrate. HRV is the small variation in time between your heartbeats.

A plan comes in when you have a race: running, Hyrox or general fitness. Without a race, the recommendation for each day is enough. Complete is free to download, and logging and sharing your workouts on it stay free.

Where other apps are better

Strava’s subscription page lists routes, segment leaderboards and advanced training analysis among its subscription features. If those matter most to you, Strava is the better pick. Complete is an iPhone app, so it is not an option on Android.

Frequently asked questions

Can an app make me more athletic?

An app can choose sessions, count your training and fit them around your recovery. You still do the training. A good one trains strength, power, endurance and mobility, and counts every sport you play.

How much should I train to be athletic?

There is no single number for athletic. The CDC’s floor for adults, which is for health, is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity, plus at least 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity. Complete recommends a session each day from your goals and your recovery, so you do not have to count minutes yourself.

What does the “become an athlete” goal do in Complete?

It is one of the six goals you can pick when you join. Your goals steer what Complete recommends each day, and you can add a race any time.

Does Complete work without a watch?

Yes. You can log sessions in the app, and a morning check-in on how you feel still shapes the day. The recovery score needs HRV and resting heart rate, so it needs a wearable.

Is Complete free?

Complete is free to download, and logging and sharing your workouts on it stay free.

Is Complete on Android?

No. Complete is an iPhone app.
